Gusto NY - Downtown NYC Art & Culture Tour - Lower East Side
July 14 and August 11
2pm, 235 Bowery, Lower East Side, Manhattan 10003downtownarttour.eventbrite.com
Many artists, film-makers, musicians, fashion designers and writers have called the Lower East Side home since the 1940s. Past residents of the neighborhood have included Robert Rauschenberg, Yoko Ono, Roy Lichtenstein, WilliamS.Burroughs, Mark Rothko, Christopher Wool, Chuck Close, Keith Haring, Jean Michel Basquiat, James Rosenquist, Robert Mapplethorpe and many others.
Recent decades have seen the Lower East Side transformed from a gritty slum to a full-blown contemporary art and cultural district with over 100 art galleries. Before this gentrification, artists and other creatives could afford to rent unused industrial spaces as their studios for little money. That is no longer the case for most artists.
We will visit some of the most exciting new art galleries in the neighborhood and learn about their current exhibits. The tour will also point out important downtown cultural locations along the way including artist studios, graffiti hot-spots, DIY music venues, theaters and legendary party spots.
